Considering going vegetarian or vegan? Just want to see where your meat truly comes from? Then you should check out http://www.meat.org/, the website the meat industry doesn't want you to see. The idea of the website is simple, meaning it's easy to use...spread the word about the meat industry...the TRUTH about the meat industry, that is. For those who are skeptical, or think this was just started by some supremist group, you should watch any of the many videos provided on the site as proof of how the meat industry treats animals, or check out the one below.
Find out more at Meat.org.
So...that's pretty much the gist of it. In addition to the videos it has to watch, the site is specifically designed to spread word of what you find out on social networking sites, such as facebook and myspace, or email, if that's your preferred method of delivery.
If you find yourself disturbed by the truth you see in the videos on this site, but you're not quite sure you can make the transition to the vegetarian lifestyle, then why not try out their 30 day vegetarian pledge, featured below, like I did? And to help with your transition, they offer a free vegetarian starter kit on the site, or you can find it here: http://www.peta.org/living/vegetarian-living/free-vegetarian-starter-kit.aspx

McCruelty
Did you know....in the slaughterhouses of McDonald's (http://www.mcdonalds.com/) U.S. and Canadian chicken suppliers, birds are dumped out of their transport crates and hung upside down in metal shackles, which can result in broken bones, extreme bruising, and hemorrhaging. Workers have the opportunity to abuse live birds, and birds have their throats cut while they are still conscious. Many birds are immersed in tanks of scalding-hot water while they are still alive and able to feel pain. This is why PETA's McCruelty campaign is one of my favorites. Don't believe me? Watch the video below for proof (warning: not for weak stomachs)....
McCruelty: I'm Hatin' It--Learn More.
Many think People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA (http://www.peta.org/) is an extremist group who villainizes anyone who doesn't conform to their standards of living (going vegan or vegetarian), but as long as I've been a member, I've never been pushed into a direction I didn't believe in, even when I wasn't ready to make the vegan switch yet. For the purposes of their McCruelty campaign (http://www.mccruelty.com/), they aren't trying to eliminate McDonald's altogether (for those of you who are absolutely unwilling to change their meat-eating ways), they're just trying to provide more humane alternatives to how they kill the animals, which as one of the largest sellers of chicken meat, I'd say that's their corporate responsibility.

Oceana
Are you into saving whales? Dolphins? Sea Turtles? Fish?! Then working with Oceana to protect our oceans and marine life might be for you! Oceana (http://na.oceana.org/) is the largest international organization focused solely on ocean conservation. Their offices in North America, Central America, South America and Europe work together on a limited number of strategic, directed campaigns to achieve measurable outcomes that will help return our oceans to former levels of abundance. Their scientists work closely with their teams of economists, lawyers and advocates to achieve realistic results for the oceans.
Even if your thing isn't the ocean, maybe it's the environment as a whole, or animal rights...it doesn't matter, Oceana's actions list has something for everyone. You can choose to help by doing anything from saving Sharks, Loggerhead and Sea Turtles, to trying to put a stop to off-shore drilling, to getting stores to post mercury warnings on seafood displays and pledging to not trash the oceans. If you choose to put your activism skills to work on this cause, see http://na.oceana.org/en/act for a complete list of actions. If you're interested in joining Oceana's Wavemaker program, it's is easy and free. Immediately after joining, they send you an e-mail confirming your membership and telling you about some opportunities you can take to protect the oceans. Sign up here: http://takeaction.oceana.org/t/7443/content.jsp?content_KEY=4154
In addition to all those ways you can help, http://na.oceana.org/en/our-work catalogues different campaigns they're working on, and what you can do to help further whichever particular cause you choose. Another cool feature this site has to offer is their animal discovery page (http://na.oceana.org/en/explore/creatures), which shows all the different life that inhabits our oceans, along with cool facts about them. Their Living Blue page (http://na.oceana.org/en/living-blue), a clever take on "living green", is full of fun ways to get lost, including recipes, a green list, a plastic's pledge, do one green thing, 10 things you can do to save the ocean, and more!

Think Before You Speak
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) teens experience homophobic remarks and harassment throughout the school day, creating an atmosphere where they feel disrespected, unwanted and unsafe. Homophobic remarks such as “that’s so gay” are the most commonly heard; these slurs are often unintentional and a common part of teens’ vernacular. Most do not recognize the consequences, but the casual use of this language often carries over into more overt harassment.
The rate at which students use and hear negative language about lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) people is huge. Over half of all students report hearing homophobic remarks often at school.
The common use of anti-LGBT language is directly related to an even bigger problem – the bullying and harassment of LGBT students. 9 out of 10 LGBT students report being harassed at school in the last year. Over one-third of LGBT students have been physically assaulted at school because of their sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. Such frequent harassment results in LGBT students being more likely than others to:
- Feel unsafe
- Miss school
- Receive lower grades
- Not attend college
Creating a safe environment for all students - LGBT and straight alike - begins with one simple act: thinking before you speak. A lot of anti-LGBT language is said carelessly, and isn’t intended as negative or hurtful. Understand what you’re saying, and think about the potential consequences of the words you choose.
This campaign, Think Before You Speak (http://www.thinkb4youspeak.com/), aims to raise awareness about the prevalence and consequences of anti-LGBT bias and behavior in America’s schools. Ultimately, the goal is to reduce and prevent the use of homophobic language in an effort to create a more positive environment for LGBT teens. The campaign also aims to reach adults, including school personnel and parents; their support of this message is crucial to the success of efforts to change behavior.
If you find that you are passionate about this cause, and would like to do more, I would suggest:
- Say Something Original and pledge to be an ally to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students. In becoming an ally, you promise not to use homophobic words and phrases – such as “that’s so gay” – and to educate others when you hear them being used. Once you’ve taken the pledge, invite your friends to do the same! Find the pledge here: http://www.thinkb4youspeak.com/SignThePledge
- Join (or start!) your school's GSA. Participating in Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) and similar clubs are a great way for students to make their schools safer. These student-led clubs work to address anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in their schools and promote respect for all students. To find out if your school already has a GSA or to get information on how to start one, register at http://www.studentorganizing.org/.
- Participate in a Day of Action. Each year, hundreds of thousands of students around the country participate in GLSEN’s four national Days of Action: the Day of Silence, Ally Week, TransAction! and the Dr. MLK Jr. Organizing Weekend. During these Days of Action, students organize events, hold rallies and take other actions to draw attention to the problem of anti-LGBT bullying in schools. To find out more, visit http://www.dayofsilence.org/.
- Get involved with a GLSEN chapter. Local GLSEN chapters are working everyday to make schools safer in their communities. By volunteering with a GLSEN chapter, you can make a difference beyond your hallways and improve the safety of every school in your community. To find a GLSEN chapter near you, visit http://www.glsen.org/.

FreeRice
FreeRice (http://freerice.com/) is a wonderful charity that has 2 goals in mind: educating people around the world for free while providing free rice to people in need....I find it a great way to pass a few minutes on your work break, or the half hour you'll spend at the library on lunch.
FreeRice has a custom database containing knowledge questions at varying levels of difficulty. There are levels appropriate for beginners and levels that will challenge the most scholarly professors. In between are levels suitable for students of all ages, business people, homemakers, doctors, truck drivers, retired people. Everyone!
FreeRice automatically adjusts to your level. It starts by giving you questions of increasing difficulty and then, based on how you do, assigns you an approximate starting level. You then determine a more exact level for yourself as you play. When you get a question wrong, you go to an easier level. When you get three questions in a row right, you go to a harder level. This one-to-three ratio is best for keeping you at the "outer fringe" of your skills, where learning can take place.
FreeRice does not make any money from this. FreeRice is a website committed to the cause of ending hunger around the world. It is run entirely for free and at no profit. All money (100%) raised by the site goes to the UN World Food Programme to help feed the hungry.
The UN World Food Programme works around the globe and FreeRice donations are made with no restrictions. This freedom of use allows them to apply the donations to countries that need it most, often those that don't make the headlines in the news, yet where chronic hunger continues unchecked. Often World Food Programme is able to purchase the rice in the very countries where the beneficiaries are located, cutting down on the transport time to reach the hungry and helping to stimulate local economies at the same time.
So, if you find you have a few minutes, please click above and play FreeRice to help feed someone who would not have food otherwise today.

• In Cambodia, to provide take-home rations of four kilograms of rice for two months to 13,500 pregnant and nursing women.
• In Uganda, to feed 66,000 school children for a week.• In Nepal, to feed over 108,000 Bhutanese refugees for three days.
• In Bhutan, to feed 41,000 children for 8 days.
• In Myanmar, to feed 750,000 cyclone affected people for 3 days.

Amnesty International
Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights for all. If you find yourself outraged by human rights abuses but inspired by hope for a better world, then help work to improve human rights through campaigning and international solidarity. Now, I realize that this is a hot topic for some, because the 2.2 million-strong organization fights to free prisoners of conscience, abolish the death penalty, stop violence against women and ensure everyone enjoys full human rights. If, however, you find yourself, like me, passionate against stopping human abuses around the world, then you can help by:
• publicating and promoting their research findings
• public demonstrations
• holding vigils
• letter-writing campaigns (Some of the easiest & one of my favorites)
• human rights education (Whether you're holding an assembly or talking with friends and family)
• awareness-raising concerts (Are you a musician? Then this is for you!)
• direct lobbying
• targeting appeals
• email petitions and other online actions (Another easy thing to do from the comfort of your home)
• partnerships with local campaigning groups
• community activities (I would really encourage this one!)
• co-operation with student groups (or, if you're still in school, form your own!)
If you would like to help, but aren't sure where to start, I would suggest taking a look at their Action Center: http://www.amnesty.org/en/activism-center
You may not think that YOU can make a difference, but your participation helps immensely. When you add your name to their "Actions" you increase the pressure on governments and human rights violators to tackle human rights abuses...and for some, that can literally be the difference between life and death, and I can hardly think of anything more important than that.
Another cool feature their site offers is an Online Community Volunteer program that allows you to offer your skills and leadership in activism and mobilization for an Online Community. Your primary role will be to encourage and support your fellow activists to engage and mobilize for human rights. It is a virtual role, which means that no matter where in the world you are, you can still participate.
There are three main roles where they need activists to take a leadership role:
- Online Ambassador: Write blogs, online commentaries and posts that help highlight human rights issues and Amnesty International’s campaigns to a wider audience. You can also choose to be an Online Ambassador specifically for our Demand Dignity campaign and become a Voice Ambassador. As a Voice Ambassador, you will highlight the link between poverty and human rights.
- Moderator: Engage with activists in Amnesty International social networking spaces, engage in conversation and make sure the debate stays respectful and constructive.
- Greeter: Engage with activists in Amnesty International social networking spaces and support fellow activists by answering their questions and welcoming them to the Online Community.

Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN)
The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (http://www.rainn.org/) is the nation's largest anti-sexual assault organization. RAINN operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1.800.656.HOPE and the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline at rainn.org, and publicizes the hotline's free, confidential services; educates the public about sexual assault; and leads national efforts to prevent sexual assault, improve services to victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice.
Among its programs, RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1.800.656.HOPE. This nationwide partnership of more than 1,100 local rape treatment hotlines provides victims of sexual assault with free, confidential services around the clock. The hotline helped 137,039 sexual assault victims in 2005 and has helped more than one million since it began in 1994.
Interested in joining the fight against sexual assault? There are many ways you can get involved:
• Social Networking - post banners, bulletins, bumper stickers and/or content on your personal page (ex: MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, Ryze)
• Blogging Brigade - post on your personal blog and/or some of your favorite outside blogs; post on your personal and/or some of your favorite websites (ex. LiveJournal, BlogHer, Typepad, Twitter)
• Email Outreach - send out news updates on statistics, events, public policy decisions (ex. listserves, community organizations)
• Social Bookmarking - select topics that match your interests, share and recommend to others (ex. StumbleUpon, Digg, del.icio.us)
• Photo/Video Sharing - upload and share photos and/or videos from RAINN events (ex. Flickr, Bubbleshare, Blip.tv, YouTube, Revver)
• Host a small event for your friends or family.
• Create a large fundraising event.
• Ask friends and colleagues for contributions (no event necessary).
• Raise money from local businesses.
• Organize a local run or walk.
• Come up with your own idea — be as creative as you like.
So, if you're truly passionate about helping those who've been affected by sexual assaults, I hope you found this helpful.

PETA2
Another group whose work I'm passionate about is PETA's (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) Street Team Program (http://www.peta2.com/), aimed at teens and college students. By joining the street team, every action you take for animals, earns you points which can be exchanged for cool merchandise...sweatshirts, notebooks, DVDs, books, stickers, etc. can all be found in both their store and on the Street Team prize list (http://streetteam.peta2.com/public/team_view.cfm?option=redeem&actionid=531).
Some more reasons I love working on PETA2's website:
- they give you all the tools you need to be a DIY activist (http://www.peta2.com/TAKECHARGE/t-diyact.asp)
- you can chat with others on the boards (http://streetteam.peta2.com/public/folder_view.cfm?pageid=341&option=view_topics&actionid=531)
- they have an area specifically for college activism (http://www.peta2.com/COLLEGE/index.asp)
- they have their own cool games (http://www.peta2.com/OUTTHERE/index.asp)
- they are backed by TONS of celebrities (http://www.peta2.com/OUTTHERE/index.asp)
- they have a section for those with only a little time to spare for activism (http://blog.peta2.com/minute_mission/)
- they have a section for those who live online (http://www.peta2.com/TAKECHARGE/t-onlineact.asp)
Some common misconceptions about PETA:
- members throw pies (or fake blood) at people in fur...actually, PETA as an organization always preaches politeness and legal means of switching people off to the idea of meat/ fur/ etc.
- all members are vegan (no meat, eggs, or dairy)...actually, PETA understands that there are different paths to the same place, which is the ETHICAL treatment of animals. Maybe you like eating out, but you want to know that your meat was killed humanely...you could help sign a petition to get McDonald's or KFC to kill their animals using Controlled Atmospere Killings (CAK), which is WAY more humane, and still enables you to eat meat.
- PETA members are out to shut everything down...actually, PETA only strives to make conditions for animals more ethical.
- members are irrational and close-minded...for this one, I would invite you to check out the PETA2 Street Team boards and see for yourself that members are as diverse as any other organization. You get people from all genders/ walks of life/ countries who are passionate about helping animals.
- we all push hot button issues...if you call wanting humane conditions for animals a "hot button" issue, then yes! We do and I'm proud of it!
So, come and check out PETA's site, and if you decide to join the Street Team, use me (Jessica Hopkinson at monalisa8664@yahoo.com) as your referral, and we'll both win!!! :)

Cup Kozies
Big on the green movement? Big on your morning coffee? Big on saving the planet? Then Cup Kozy, Ltd. (http://www.cupkozy.com/) is for you!!! It’s estimated that 14 billion cups of coffee are served every year wrapped in a single-use, cardboard coffee sleeve, which add up to 2.8 billion pounds of trash! The average American consumes 3.4 cups of coffee daily. Based on 2008 sales reports, CupKozy helped to keep 19,000 pounds of trash out of landfills...which is worth a mention in my book, or rather, on my blog.
CupKozy is a coffee lover's stylish, eco alternative to disposable sleeves used by coffee shops everywhere...think how many trees you'll save by using the cute CupKozy sleeves for your daily coffee, not to mention, from an artist's point of view, they give your coffee an interesting, imaginative, and personalized touch. It's a way to celebrate Earth Day every day!
Some more great facts about CupKozy:
- CupKozys are handmade. No factories, sweatshops or slave labor
- The fabric used in making CupKozys is wool, a renewable resource
- Fits most 12, 16 & 20 oz. disposable hot or cold coffee cups
- CupKozys are compact and can be rolled up and attached to your keychain or bag
- Available in a variety of stylish color combinations
- Can be custom printed for promotional & corporate branding opportunities

To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA)
As someone who once struggled (and sometimes still struggles) with addiction, self-medicating, and inflicting damage on myself as a release, I'm very passionate about the work done by To Write Love On Her Arms (http://www.twloha.com/), a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people like me...people like my sis-in-law...people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery.
If you would like to further find out what they are about, you should visit their blog here: http://www.twloha.com/blog ...if you are interested in following their cause from your social networking site, you can find TWLOHA on twitter (http://twitter.com/twloha), facebook (http://www.facebook.com/towriteloveonherarms), myspace (http://www.myspace.com/towriteloveonherarms), tumblr (http://twloha.tumblr.com/), and socialvibe (http://www.socialvibe.com/towriteloveonherarms)
If you are serious about making this your cause, and want to get up to your elbows in it, I would suggest joining their Street Team, a social networking extension aimed at helping you find ways to help the cause.

1GOAL (Are You A Soccer Fan? Show Your Support This World Cup!)
Today, 72 million children in the world are denied the chance to go to school. These children could be our next generation’s leaders, sports stars, doctors and teachers. But they face a lifelong struggle against poverty.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Since 2000, 40 million more children are in school. Education beats poverty – and gives people the tools to help themselves.
1GOAL (http://www.join1goal.org/) is a campaign seizing the power of football (soccer) to ensure that education for all is a lasting impact of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Raising our voices all over the world we believe that, together, we can make education a reality for the millions of boys and girls who remain out of school.
“This is our chance to show not just out-of-school children, but our own children, that when we make a promise, we keep it. With your help, we could have billions of fans cheering not just for their teams, but for one team: 1GOAL. This is our moment to shine; we can bring millions of children in from the shadows of ignorance, and light up their lives with the legacy of education.” ~ Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah Co-Founder and Global Co-Chair, 1GOAL
You can help make education for all a reality.
1GOAL is bringing together footballers, fans, charities, corporations and individuals to lobby and achieve our ambitious aim of education for everyone. By joining the 1GOAL team, you can strengthen the campaign’s voice and give us the best possible chance of success.

Facebook Causes
Chances are, in this day in age, you have a facebook account. For those of you who are addicted to facebook and wanting to change the world, I would suggest joining Facebook Causes (www.facebook.com/causes). FB Causes is a wonderful application that is centered around helping whatever causes you're passionate about...whether animal/ human rights, UNICEF, or clean water in Africa...by loading/ sending pictures and videos, creating and signing petitions, inviting friends (thus, creating awareness), and raising money (either by fundraising or donating yourself) for your cause. While some think of FB Causes as just another form of "slactivism", I've found that it's a terrific platform for recruiting followers to your cause, if nothing else.
Another thing that makes this application fun, is the social interaction between different people from all over the globe, binding together to fight for a cause. You are able to send pics, give props, comment, add videos, keep up with your friends (it keeps a chart of who's done the most actions out of you and your friends for the following categories: fundraising, recruiting, awareness, advocacy, and karma), and even create your own causes. ONE WARNING: because anyone is able to create a "cause", and because you can donate to these "causes", I would be weary of donating (or fundraising among your friends) to unprofessional-looking "companies" or organizations. I would stick with a verified non-profit organization. You can tell by pressing on any cause that you're interested in...after that, click on the 'about' tab...the third section down will read 'Donations go to..."...and below that it should read: A 501 (c)(3) nonprofit. That's how you know if it's legit.
Above is my Facebook Causes profile...if you're interested in checking it out, go here: http://apps.facebook.com/causes/activists/45056902
